Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA): A synthetic auxin used in plant tissue culture to stimulate root initiation and enhance root development in explants.

IBA

Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) is a plant growth regulator used in plant tissue culture to promote root growth. It’s also used to promote the growth of flowers and fruits in crops and ornamentals.

How it’s used

  • Micropropagation

IBA is used to initiate root formation in vitro, or in a test tube, in a process called micropropagation.

  • Callus formation

IBA is used in conjunction with cytokinins to form masses of undifferentiated cells called callus. Callus cells can then be exposed to hormones to form roots.

  • Root induction

IBA can be applied topically or added to the plant tissue culture medium to promote root growth.

Benefits

  • IBA is more effective and efficient than its natural counterpart because plants cannot break it down as quickly.
  • IBA is compatible with a wide range of plant species, including woody, herbaceous, and ornamental plants.
